ABOUT JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD (JBLM)

Joint Base Lewis-McChord, known as JBLM, is a U.S. military installation located approximately 9 miles south-southwest of Tacoma in Pierce County, Washington. It was formed on February 1, 2010, when Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base merged following a 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission recommendation. JBLM is the only Army power projection base west of the Rocky Mountains in the continental United States and serves as home to I Corps and the 62nd Airlift Wing. The installation supports more than 40,000 active duty, Guard, and Reserve service members, approximately 14,000 civilian workers, and more than 90,000 family members and retirees. Approximately 70 percent of JBLM service members and their families live off-base in surrounding Pierce and Thurston County communities.

Things To Do

  • McChord Air Museum: Visit the official U.S. Air Force museum on base, which preserves the history of McChord Field through aircraft exhibits, vintage uniforms, armament collections, photographs, and artifacts tracing the installation’s role from World War II through the present day
  • Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge: Explore a biologically rich wetland preserve where the Nisqually River meets Puget Sound, offering hiking trails; birding opportunities among more than 200 documented species; and views of otters, mink, beavers, deer, and Pacific tree frogs just minutes from the installation
  • American Lake Recreation Area: Take advantage of on-base recreation at American Lake, where JBLM’s Outdoor Recreation program offers kayak, fishing boat, and pontoon rentals, along with cabin rentals and lakeside access for service members and their families

Interesting and Fun Facts

  • The First Gift of Land: When Pierce County citizens voted in 1917 to purchase 70,000 acres and donate it to the federal government to build Camp Lewis, it marked the first time in American history that a military installation was created through an outright gift of land by the citizens themselves, not federal acquisition.
  • West Coast Power Projection Platform: JBLM is the only Army power projection base west of the Rocky Mountains in the continental United States, giving it a strategic role in deploying troops and equipment to the Pacific Rim, with direct access to the deep-water ports of Tacoma, Olympia, and Seattle.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

  • GO Transit (On-Base Shuttle): GO Transit provides free, on-demand stop-to-stop shuttle service throughout JBLM for anyone with base access.
